Seeking Sports Injury Treatment When One Is Injured

By Bjorn O'connor

It is not at all pleasant to have to undergo sports injury treatment. But, for anyone engaging in a game, there is always that chance. Even if the problem is only because of repeated movement, or constant pounding, it still is very painful and may often require consulting with sports doctors. There are some home remedies that can be tried, either before or after consulting one, that will help alleviate some of the pain.

Several types of injuries require the consultation of professionals specializing in sports medicine. These vary in degrees of severity and pain. Pain does not always, however, indicate the severity of the problem. Some of these problems include sprains, strains, tendinitis, and fractures. Any time a joint can't be moved, or weight cannot be born, or when there is numbness and tingling, a professional should be sought immediately.

Acute problems have a sudden onset. The pain may be very excruciating, with a large amount of swelling and discoloring . The person should immobilize that part of their body and seek immediate attention. This is especially true when movement is restricted and the person cannot bear any weight at all. It is important to get immediate attention by a medical person.

Chronic pain develops slowly over time, and is usually not as intense. This type condition results for repeatedly overusing a part of the body. Acute injuries can also develop over time into a chronic condition.

Certain precautions help avoid injuries. Among other things, proper equipment for the sport is important, as is the proper clothing and shoes for the activity. The method of performing actions is another precautions that should be taken. Don't repeatedly use the same muscle groups, switch them up. Warm up before exercise, train correctly, and don't overdo activities to help prevent damage.

In the vent an accident does happen, there are first aid actions that can be followed. Remembering the acronym for rest, ice, compression, and elevations - RICE - will help you understand what need to be done. Icing should be done for twenty minutes, then rest twenty minutes. Repeat this four or five times until relief is felt.

Understanding when it is okay to self-treat and when there is the necessity to consult a physician is an important aspect of assessment. If a bone is obviously broken, or if there is a lot of swelling and severe pain, then it is important to consult a medical professional. Even if it appears to only be a sprain or a strain, if improvement is not realized within two weeks, consult a professional. It usually is okay to use an anti-inflammatory for up to two weeks, but a physician's advice must be sought for longer term usage.

After using sports injury treatment, one should not just jump back into action. It should be approached slowly and with caution. Injuries can be slow to get well, particularly where blood flow is low. To avoid injuring the area again, slowly easing back into activity is important. There will be some tenderness and weakness in the area that was affected, and it will be easy to injure it again, possibly even worse than before.
