Fitness Is a Skill

By Andrew van Ness

Perhaps you have seen some of those really muscular dudes at the gym who are completely ripped and you said to yourself "Wow! Those dudes are tough!"

Well, what you may not get is that, yes, these men are indeed powerful in specific ways. However, they do not really have a type of versitile strength that can be applied to just about any area of life.

Rather they oftentimes are only good at performing the fixed movements that you see them do where you work out, whether that's bicep curls, bench presses, or deadlifts.

It makes you really consider though, what's the point of all this?

I mean fitness is not just about something that you do in the gym. You want to be stronger in a wider capacity than merely having the ability to do an army press or some other movement.

The end target of fitness and strength isn't the praise of all the other sweaty dudes at the gym. The ultimate result of all this pain is to be strong in your day to day life. This is the reason I like bodyweight exercise like this workout on Nerd Fitness.

When you get right down to it, you could probably care less about how many reps you can do of this exercise or that exercise. What you really want is to be able to count on your body when you need it to perform, if that's at work, while you're playing with your kids, or when you're playing soccer or football with your pals on the weekend.

But so many guys fall prey to the mirage of gym performance. The reps, the "warrior" attitude, the weight, the heavy metal playing while you are struggling to get that one last rep in.

Don't misunderstand me. It is very important to have a good measure of progress when you are strength training, but it is important to not lose touch with what you are truly trying to achieve from all of your training. It is a common example of not losing the forest through the trees.

So what does this mean in your everyday life? This means that you shouldn't put so much stress on consistently making an attempt to squeeze in more reps, you shouldn't push yourself to the very edge of incurring an injury, and you should not feel guilty or shamed if you need to take a little time to advance at your own speed.

Remember, fitness is something that you try to build in order that you can enjoy your life and use your body when you must use it. So long as you can do that, then there's actually no need for all of the overhyped machismo of the gym. Fitness is about having fun and enjoying life.

Don't become confused about the bigger picture, and do not forget to not let your life pass you by while you are working out in the gym.
