By Lila Bryant

When it comes to training the young people, there exists a disconnect between what is known and believed to be the right training and what coaches want for them. This is particularly the case when it comes to agility and speed training programs. Many coaches and some parents too, adopt a result now mentality, which is contrary to what should be the case. It is worth considering that different individuals have different abilities and interests. It is therefore important for the coaches engaged in youth football training to develop programs and implement them with youths of various abilities and sports interests.

First and foremost, the exercise must be kept fun and enjoyable. Football is a game and must be enjoyed by not only the fans, but also the very players. In fact, the players are the basis of such an enjoyment. An interesting training session makes players rather involved and co-operative. It is this fulfillment that keeps them in the game and makes them to want to do it even the following day and the whole week.

Good foundations begins with teaching the fundamentals. The kids are at their development stage and focusing on basics at this point forms the foundation of good players. The trainer should avoid engaging in quite complicated skills, unless the basics have been mastered effectively. However, only those players that have mastered these fundamentals are allowed to progress to more advanced skills. Examples of these basics include, but not limited to, solid blocking and tackle and ball catching techniques.

It is also important to enhance good sportsmanship. The noble task of coaching bestowed to you is an opportunity to shape the society and the future of many kids. Traditionally, the field of soccer was faced with many cases of indiscipline. To be a good trainer, be sure to instill some values into your team of trainees. Those under your stewardship ought to be leaders, leading by examples through effort and enthusiasm. Your effort should be evidenced in their performance in grades and in matches. They should be peacemakers as opposed to lawbreakers.

While in the field, minimize injuries as much as possible. Monitor all their moves and equip them with the required materials for the exercise. Although normal injuries are part of the game, strive to prevent unnecessary injuries.

As a coach, remember that good coaching lies in the premise of building strong and durable relationships. Your effect should be referenced as having a positive impact on someone. What you impact in the youth is important, but what they do with that they have learnt is more important. Ensure to enhance their talents and that of others.

Youth football coaches are also confronted with an issue of kids having the desire to play their dream position. Positions that are most often scrambled for include quarterback, wide receiver and running back. Though not every child is suited for these glamour positions, the trainer must be careful so as not kill their enthusiasm.

Simply put, the art of soccer mentor-ship is rather involving in terms of knowledge and experience. Always carry out research on best practices and session programs. Put in mind that different kids have varying talents, abilities and sport interests. While developing programs, take care of this fact and remember to communicate accordingly, using different avenues.
